Iain Hughes was born and brought up in Dronfield, and attended Dronfield Infants, Dronfield Juniors, Gosforth and Dronfield Henry Fanshawe Schools. It was during his time at Gosforth School that Iain was introduced to the acoustic guitar by his physics teacher. After learning how to tune a guitar, he was determined to play at the School carol service, which was due to take place within a period of less than two months; which he did. Within a year, Iain, along with fellow classmates started a three piece electric guitar band, who went on to play their first gig at the Dronfield Hilltop Church mission hall.
After some instrument changes, the bands early years consisted of practicing at a pig farm, in a barn, between Dronfield and Barlow. The band's first "gate crashed" gig was at Hilltop Sports and Social Club at the age of 15, after they were spotted peering through the windows by members of the band who had been booked for that evening. A further classmate and a friend subsequently joined the band, and they proceeded to play two, or three times a week at many pubs, working men's clubs, and private parties for the following 5 years.
After the band went their separate ways, each starting their own families, Iain played for short periods with duos, and other bands, but ultimately did not play the guitar for many years. Once his children were of a certain age, Iain was at a Dronfield pub listening to a local duo performing, which sparked his interest in playing once again. Iain purchased an acoustic guitar, and started learning a whole series of new tunes. Iain has since supported local open Mic, and live music nights for the last 14 years in and around Dronfield, and has also played at private parties by request. His style is fairly eclectic, and includes, but is not limited to songs by; The Beatles, Eagles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Snow Patrol, Elvis Pressley, David Bowie, Glen Campbell, Elton John, and Lionel Ritchie. Basically, songs which are either easy listening, or good to sing along to!!!
Iain was very pleased to be asked to play at Dronfest this year, and to support an excellent local charitable event, and he hopes to see you there, when he performs on the acoustic stage.
